6301 Quebec Drive. Probably one of the most well known of all houes in the Hollywood Dell because it was "immortalized" in the 1944 film "Double Indemnity" directed by Billy Wilder, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. According to the 1927 permit, the 10 room, 2 story house was built by architect Edward S. Okubo and contractor O'Neal & Son for owners John E. and Florence Bauer. The Bauers lived in the house until the house was put up for sale in 1954 and would allow Billy Wilder and his film crew to use the exterior and interior of his home to film one of the scenes in "Double Indemnity".
Paramount Pictures was the production company for the film, "Double Indemnity", which was released on July 6, 1944. This residence was used in the film as Barbara Stanwyck's character, Phyllis Dietrichson's house. There were scenes filmed in front of the house.
There were scenes also filmed inside the foyer and living room.
In the late 1990s, the house was purchased by interior designer Mae Brunken who gave the house a make-over, restoring the house to it's 1940s charm as in the movie. The house has been featured in the Los Angeles Times and several design magazines.
Wonder how many thousands of visitors have driven up El Contento Drive and stoped at the intersection of Quebec and El Contento Drive to snap a photo of the house since the film premiered. Since the house is a favorite destination in several Los Angeles attractions books and all over the internet, thousands is a good guess.
