Argyle Avenue in Hollywood began developing into a residential area circa 1904 when Dr. Alfred G. Schloesser established the Schloesser Terrace tract and built his estate and named it the Glengarry Castle . He then built another home closeby, naming it Castle San Souci in 1912. While both of these homes were later demolished, the street became known for high-end apartment living in the 1920s, featuring landmarks like the Castle Argyle Arms (1928) and the Hollywood Argyle Apartments (1926). Famous residents include: Sessue Hayakawa, Mary Miles Minter, Lila Lee, James Kirkwood and Gary Cooper.
