The first significant homes and structures on Temple Hill Drive were built starting around 1912. While not built by "thespians" in the traditional sense, they were constructed by the Krotona Colony, a utopian community of the Theosophical Society. The street itself was named in 1914, referring to the colony's "Temple of the Rosy Cross". Charlie Chaplin lived at Moorcrest, located at 6147 Temple Hill Drive, during the early 1920s. Chaplin only briefly rented the home for a few years in the early 1920s before moving to his famous "Breakaway House" in Beverly Hills. Other famous residents included: May McAvoy, Mary Astor and Belle Bennett.
