The history of Alcyona Drive is rooted in the early 20th-century spiritualist movement and the development of the Hollywood Dell. Alcyona Drive was named around 1913. The street was established by Dr. Martha J. Kuznik, a retired physician and dedicated member of the Krotona Theosophical Society. Alcyona is a variation of Alcyone the "star name" given to the Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti in 1910 by the Theosophist Charles Leadbeater. Alcyona Drive is a living museum of early 20th-century architectural styles including; Spanish Colonial Revivial, Mediterranean Colonial Revival and Normandy French Style. Director Kenneth Hawks resided her after marrying actress Mary Astor. Other actors include: John Abbott, Ava Gardner, Helen Hayes and William Demarest. The 1918 city directory cited Alcyona Drive as one block north from Primrose Avenue and one block east of Vine. No houses were built until the mid-1920s. One of the first residents of Alcyona Drive was artist and part-time actress Aryel Houwink, later known as Aryel Darma, who built 2156 Alcyona Drive. By 1926, Alcyona Drive extended past Ivarene Avenue and El Contento Drive.
